What will students study in PE this year?

The lessons that we teach provides a broad and balanced curriculum that promotes the moral, cultural, mental and physical development through two hours of practical PE in 6 week blocks, the activities are outlined below:

What are the major assessments this year?

At week five of a block of work students will be assessed on their performance of physical skills in practices and their application of skills in a performance/game, they will have an opportunity to act upon feedback in a final assessment in week six. There is no theory assessment until year 9, where we have a health written test based on the GCSE specification.

What will the current performance grade be based on, and what do the levels mean?

In the first year of an activity we focus on Motor competence: developing a range of movements that become increasingly specific to ensure competency participating in sport and physical activity

In following years priority lies within rules, strategies, and tactics: knowledge of the conventions of participation in different sports and physical activities reducing the risk of exclusion and promoting a sense of belonging through confident and competent involvement

Throughout we embed the importance of healthy participation: knowing how to partake safely and effectively, increasing confidence in participation

Students are graded on the following:

  • Applying appropriate skills and techniques for the position/activity or choreography.
  • Level of consistency, precision and fluency
  • Application of individual role consistently and contribution to the outcome of a competitive situation
  • Implementation of some strategies and tactics or compositional ideas/choreography
  • Communication with and awareness of other players/performers to benefit the (team) performance
  • Decision making and adapting performance whilst under pressure
  • Utilisation of appropriate physical characteristics i.e speed in Football

What should my daughter do if she feels she is struggling in the subject?

It’s always best to try to speak to your PE teacher first, before the lesson has started for a short term, one off struggle (i.e wrong PE kit/feeling ill!). If there is something longer term to be discussed, depending on the nature please find a time to meet with the teacher or email or call in to discuss further to find a solution.

In terms of improving performance, students will be regularly assessed and given feedback regarding performance. Specific lunchtime school clubs are also offered throughout the year for students to attend to enhance their skills further. Please see the extra-curricular timetable for more information.

How can I support my daughter?

The best way anyone at home can help engagement in physical activity is by finding something you love to do together, whether its giving a new activity a go at a local sports centre or going for a run or a walk. We also encourage students to attend at least two extra-curricular clubs a week and promote an active lifestyle and healthy eating habits.

Students always perform best when they are prepared, therefore ensuring full PE kit is purchased prior to the start of the academic year is a sure-fire way of making this happen. The kit list is here.

What kind of independent work should my daughter complete?

We encourage students to follow NHS guidelines to physical activity which can be found here. We aim for young people to exercise for an hour a day, to stay healthy! Students may wish to compete in one of the school teams and therefore are expected to regularly attend the school club.
